Every jeweler has the same conversation several times a month. A customer brings in a ring that looks wrong, and the damage wasn’t caused by wear. It was caused by cleaning. The internet is full of confident advice about household products, most of it written by people who have never had to replace a chipped emerald.
These are the seven jewelry cleaning mistakes that do real damage, and what to do instead.
1. Toothpaste and baking soda
Both work. That’s the problem. Toothpaste contains hydrated silica and other mild abrasives designed to scrub enamel, which is harder than gold. Baking soda is more aggressive still.
They remove tarnish by removing a thin layer of metal along with it. On solid silver you can get away with it a few times. On gold plating or rhodium plating, measured in microns, one enthusiastic session can go straight through to the base metal. That damage isn’t reversible without re-plating, and no warranty covers it.
2. Ultrasonic cleaners on the wrong piece
Ultrasonic machines create cavitation bubbles that collapse against the surface. For solid gold, platinum and diamonds this is excellent. For almost everything else it ranges from risky to catastrophic.
Keep out of the ultrasonic: emeralds (almost always fracture-filled), opals, pearls, turquoise, tanzanite, amber, coral, anything with a visible inclusion reaching the surface, any pavé setting where dozens of small stones are held by thin beads of metal, and any piece where a stone is glued rather than set. The vibration finds every weakness.
Most jewelry warranties specifically exclude damage from unauthorised ultrasonic cleaning. Retailers do ask what you cleaned it with, and they can usually tell.
3. Ammonia-based cleaners on treated stones
Ammonia cuts through grease quickly, which is why it appears in so many jewelry dips. It also etches porous and treated stones, degrades the oil or resin in fracture-filled emeralds and rubies, and permanently dulls the surface of pearls.
There’s a second problem with repeated use on settings: over time ammonia can attack certain solders and loosen stones. The safer route is a cleaner formulated without it. Starglow Polish and similar ammonia-free formulations remove the same oil and oxidation without the chemical risk, which matters most on pieces where you can’t identify every stone with confidence.
4. Thermal shock
Boiling water, or hot water straight after cold, cracks stones. Gems with inclusions expand unevenly and the internal stress does the rest. Opals in particular can craze from a temperature change alone.
Warm is the instruction, and warm means comfortable to your hand. If you wouldn’t wash your face in it, don’t clean your ring in it.
5. Cleaning before checking the setting
This one costs people stones rather than finishes. Brushing around a prong that has already worn thin is often what finally releases it, and the loss gets blamed on the cleaning rather than on the wear that preceded it.
Before any cleaning, hold the piece close to your ear and tap it gently with a fingernail. A loose stone rattles, and that faint tick means stop. Check the prongs under good light for flattened or shortened tips. If anything looks wrong, jeweler first, cleaning afterwards.
And work over a bowl, not an open sink. Every jeweler has a story about a drain trap.
6. Drying with paper towel
Paper towel feels soft and is made from wood fibre. Under magnification it’s a mass of short, hard filaments, and on a mirror-polished surface it leaves a haze of fine scratches that builds over years.
Tissue is the same. So is a cotton t-shirt washed with fabric softener, which deposits a film of its own. Use microfibre, keep those cloths for jewelry only, and wash them without softener.
7. Using one product for every material
This is the mistake that produces all the others. Someone owns a silver chain, a plated bracelet, a steel watch and a diamond ring, buys one bottle of something, and applies it to all four. The result is a product too weak for the steel and too harsh for the plating.
A cleaner and a polish are different tools. The cleaner lifts oil, grime and residue. The polish removes oxidation and restores reflectivity on metal. Neither does the other’s job well, which is the practical argument for metal polish and jewelry cleaner bundles over a single bottle and the hope that it covers everything. Matching the product to the material is most of the skill.
What to do instead
The safe routine on almost any piece is unglamorous and takes ten minutes:
- Dry brush first with a soft toothbrush to lift loose grit.
- Warm water and a drop of mild soap, two to three minutes.
- Brush behind settings and between links, where the dullness actually lives.
- Rinse in clean water, over a bowl.
- Dry fully, then apply a non-abrasive polish to the dry metal with microfibre.
- Buff with a second clean cloth.
Identify the metal before you start. Sterling silver is stamped 925, gold runs 10K to 24K, platinum is stamped PLAT or 950. Plated pieces often carry no stamp at all, which is reason enough to treat any unmarked item as plated until proven otherwise.
The short version
Most jewelry damage that arrives at a repair bench was caused by someone trying to help. Skip abrasives, check the stones before the ultrasonic, keep ammonia away from anything porous, warm water only, and match the product to the material. Do that and the only thing you’ll remove is the dirt.
